A Schwetzingen Landmark The most famous sculptures in the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens are the water-spouting stags in the central parterre. The Flemish sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt (1710–1793) created them between 1766 and 1769. History of the Schwetzingen Orangery In Schwetzingen, the Old Orangery was first built between 1718 and 1728 in the middle of the present-day parterre. After its demolition, Elector Carl Theodor had the Northern Circular Building erected in 1748 as a wintering place for exotic plants. Nicolas de Pigage (1723–1796) finally built the present-day New Orangery between 1761 and 1763, northwest of the parterre. A large orangery garden was laid out in front of the orangery. Perfected for the winter sun The 171-meter-long building is symmetrically designed. The plastered surfaces are painted in fresco technique with a decoration imitating masonry. Along the entire length of the south facade are large windows, topped with flat segment arches, which already indicate the impressive height of the interior from the outside. Thanks to the large windows and their south-facing orientation, maximum sunlight is guaranteed for the overwintering plants, even in winter. Supply from the garden Over 2,000 potted plants occasionally found their place in the Schwetzingen Orangery. The princely court appreciated the extraordinary foodstuffs and spices, thus demonstrating its exquisite taste. From orange and pomegranate trees to date palms, agaves, and coffee trees, all sorts of exotic plants were grown in Schwetzingen for the noble court society. The care and cultivation of the trees and shrubs were carried out with great effort. Current use On the right side of the orangery, the exotic plants are still overwintered today. In the orangery garden, the precious potted plants are set up, as in Carl Theodor's time, as soon as the night frosts are over. In summer, this area thus offers space for temporary exhibitions. In the central part of the orangery building, a permanent exhibition explains the extensive history of the orangery and its plants and crops. On the left side, the original figures from the palace garden have found their protected place in the lapidarium.
