Fantastic auberge in the Vercors - book ahead to stay overnight or just stop to re-fuel ( but always check ahead to be sure it’s open )

Lumberjacks and stevedores took shelter in this house with their teams of horses or cows until the end of the 19th century, the wood was brought up to the pas de la Clé to be brought down to the foot of the cliff by a corridor. From there, they were transported to the Isère at Saint Gervais where rafts were formed for the south of France. Like many forest houses, it served as a shelter for the Maquisards during the last war.

The camp established at this location, the “C3” was created in the vicinity of Autrans-Méaudre in Vercor in March 1943 to cope with the influx of those refusing to participate in the S.T.O. (Compulsory Work Service). The camp, made up of an average of thirty young men, moved many times for security reasons. It was established here from June 1943 until mid-November. The precariousness of the hut exposed to the wind led the resistance fighters to take up their winter quarters at the Gève refuge during the winter of 1943/1944. The Carteaux camp was still used from mid-May 1944 until the Vercors fighting in June and July 1944 and the order to disperse the resistance fighters given on 23 July. Today (summer 2023), thanks to the work of enthusiasts, this forest cabin has been rebuilt as faithfully as possible, on the same site. It remains open to all, so please respect these places.

Pretty little unguarded cabin where it is possible to shelter and sleep. Ideally located on a vast plateau, it offers a breathtaking view of Mont Aiguille. A spring flows all year round a few meters away. A little further away are the resistance memorial and caves.

The Vercors Massif offers two main types of huts: unguarded 'cabanes' and guarded 'refuges,' 'auberges,' or 'gîtes.' Unguarded huts provide basic shelter, often with a stove and sleeping platforms, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Guarded establishments typically offer more amenities like catering, beds, and caretaker services, usually requiring reservations.
Unguarded huts, or 'cabanes,' offer a rustic, autonomous experience. They often include a stove and sleeping platforms but typically lack mattresses or caretakers. Reservations are not possible, and they operate on a first-come, first-served basis. It's advisable to carry a tent as a backup and your own sleeping gear. For example, the Pré Peyret Hut is a beautiful stone structure with a stove and a water source nearby.
Yes, several huts in Vercors hold historical importance. The Camp des Carteaux Cabin is historically significant as a former resistance camp during WWII. The Chaumailloux Refuge is near the resistance memorial and caves, making it a symbolic spot. The Gève Refuge also served as a shelter for Maquisards during the war.
For breathtaking views, consider the Chaumailloux Refuge, ideally located on a vast plateau with stunning views of Mont Aiguille. The Allières Inn also boasts exceptional panoramic views of the Grésivaudan valley and the Belledonne, Écrins, and even Mont-Blanc massifs.
Yes, some huts are particularly welcoming for families. The Gève Refuge in the Autrans-Méaudre area offers a family atmosphere and is car-accessible. The Allières Inn is also categorized as family-friendly, providing a comfortable stopover.
The Vercors Massif offers a wide range of outdoor activities near its huts. You can enjoy various hiking trails, including moderate routes like 'The Arc pass and the Saint-Michel peak' or more challenging ones like 'Grand Veymont Loop via Pas de la Ville'. For cyclists, there are numerous cycling routes, such as 'The Vercors plateau' loop. In winter, areas around huts like the Gève Refuge are excellent for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
For guarded huts (refuges, auberges, gîtes), reservations are usually necessary, especially during peak seasons, as they offer services like catering and beds. Unguarded huts (cabanes) operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations are not possible.
Yes, several guarded huts in Vercors pride themselves on offering local cuisine. The Allières Inn is known for its local food, including raclette and lamb cooked over a wood fire. Gève Refuge is famous for its blueberry tart, and Le Clariant emphasizes local, generous, homemade cuisine. Refuge de la Molière focuses on fresh, local, and organic products.
The Pré Peyret Hut is ideally located as a crossroads between the high plateaus path. Cabane de Carette is situated at the entrance to the Hauts-Plateaux nature reserve, making it a strategic location for exploring this protected area. Le Clariant is also located at the entrance to the Vercors Hauts Plateaux, accessible by a short walk.
Many huts in Vercors have nearby water sources. The Chaumailloux Refuge has a spring that flows year-round a few meters away. The Pré Peyret Hut has a water source located just 100-200 meters south. However, it's always wise to check the current status of water sources, especially during dry periods, and carry enough water or purification tablets.
Yes, several huts serve as excellent stops for long-distance hikers. The Allières Inn is ideally placed to accommodate hikers embarking on the crossing of the Vercors. Auberge-refuge La Soldanelle in the Corrençon-en-Vercors sector is also regularly recommended for those undertaking the Grande Traversée du Vercors.
