An iconic and relatively well-preserved cross depicting a ram, although called a sheep cross, at the foot of a Templar cross. This building is located on the edge of the road and near a bridge spanning the Vienne River.

This medieval bridge, known as the 'Soubre Bridge' and made up of four arches, those at the ends in a semi-circular arch, the other two in a pointed arch, bears the name of a tapestry manufacturer whose workshops were located nearby. In the 16th century, Felletin was a prosperous town which saw the development of a significant number of industries: flour milling, tanning, paper milling, dyeing, etc. The river provided the energy necessary for the operation of the numerous mills. Next to the bridge, we notice the toll terminal symbolizing the duty that had to be paid to bring certain goods and foodstuffs into the city. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1926. While Le Mas-D'Artige itself is a small village, the surrounding Creuse department, particularly within the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park, offers an extensive network of quiet country roads and farm tracks. This guide features 4 curated routes, but the region boasts over 2,000 routes for various outdoor activities, many of which are suitable for gravel biking away from traffic.
The terrain around Le Mas-D'Artige is characterized by its serene, undulating landscape. You'll find a mix of extensive forest massifs, like those around the Monts de Guéret, picturesque river valleys, and open moorlands. Expect varied surfaces typical of gravel riding, from compacted dirt and gravel paths to some paved sections on very quiet country lanes.
Yes, the region offers routes that provide a good challenge. For instance, the Millevaches – Templar sheep cross loop from Peyrelevade is rated as difficult, covering over 45 km with more than 800 meters of elevation gain. Another demanding option is the Roby bridge – Felletin Historic Center loop from Magnat-l'Étrange, which also features significant climbing over its 48 km distance.
The routes often traverse the beautiful Millevaches en Limousin Natural Park, known for its extensive forests, unique peat bogs, and numerous lakes and rivers. Le Mas-D'Artige is near the source of the river Creuse. While riding, you might encounter scenic viewpoints over rolling hills or pass by tranquil water features. The region's authenticity and preserved nature are its main attractions.
Yes, many of the gravel routes in the area are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point without retracing your steps. Examples include the Millevaches – Templar sheep cross loop from Sornac and the Templar sheep cross – Faux-la-Montagne loop from Peyrelevade, both offering immersive circular experiences away from main roads.
The region is beautiful throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn generally offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, with fewer crowds. Summer is also suitable, though it can be warmer. Winter riding is possible, but some trails might be muddy or have varying conditions, especially in forested or higher elevation areas within the Millevaches en Limousin Natural Park.
While this guide focuses on more challenging routes, the broader Creuse department and the Millevaches en Limousin Natural Park offer a network of paths. For family-friendly options, look for routes specifically labeled as easy or those around flatter areas like the shores of Lac de Vassivière, which has dedicated lakeside gravel paths. Always check the route's difficulty and elevation profile before heading out with children.

For example, if you plan to ride the Millevaches – Templar sheep cross loop from Sornac, you would typically find parking within Sornac. Given the rural and tranquil nature of the region, amenities like cafes or shops might be sparse directly on the trails. It's advisable to plan your route to pass through villages where you can find refreshments. Always carry enough water and snacks, especially on longer rides, as stops might not be frequent. Check village services in advance for routes like the Roby bridge – Felletin Historic Center loop from Magnat-l'Étrange, which passes through Felletin.
Public transport options in this rural area can be limited. While some larger towns in the Creuse department might have bus services, direct access to smaller villages like Le Mas-D'Artige or the specific starting points of these gravel routes (e.g., Sornac, Peyrelevade, Magnat-l'Étrange) might require a car. It's best to check local bus schedules or consider driving to your chosen starting point.
