Tips from the Community

June 26, 2026, Rivière Gatineau

The Gatineau River flows through the Gatineau Valley before joining the Ottawa River, and is a major waterway in western Quebec. For centuries, it has been an important transportation route for Indigenous peoples and later played a significant role in the area’s logging industry, helping to shape the development of communities along its banks. Today, its forested shoreline, clear waters, and abundant wildlife make it a popular destination for paddling, fishing, and other outdoor recreation.

Voie Verte Chelsea is a relatively flat gravel multi-use trail that follows a former railway corridor along the Gatineau River. Stretching roughly 22 kilometres, it’s a picturesque and popular route for walking, cycling and running, with beautiful views of the river, and is a great way to connect to neighbourhoods and community destinations across the municipality.

This two-lane multi-use trail meets the Pionniers Pathway on its north side, but the Champlain Corridor Trail tends to be a little nicer since it doesn't run alongside the highway. Instead, it takes you into the young woods by some other (non-cycleway) hiking trails.

Hidden among the trees along Trail 68, this unusual rock formation resembles two faces joined at the back of their heads, each looking in a different direction. The formation stands out because it is one of the only large exposed rocks in the area, making it easy to spot against the surrounding forest. Whether you see profiles, sculptures, or something else entirely, it's one of the more memorable and talked-about landmarks along this section of Gatineau Park.

The Pioneers' Trail starts from the road, making it easily accessible by car. Parking lot P3 even allows you to park right next to it. A cycle path also leads here for those wishing to cycle.

Warning!!! Toilets in Gatineau Park: Okay if you need to use it urgently, but the experience will be very bad. A chemical toilet is 1000x better than this. A smell you'll remember for a long time!!!
