Section of the old military road with an excellent view of Vinadio and its lake. Cool and shaded, it is worth a visit.

Pros: never boring, no traffic, shaded on almost the entire route. Cons: continuous ups and downs that increase the elevation gain, some very impactful ramps, largely in the middle of trees that cut off the view. Definitely worth doing at least once because it deserves it. Whether it's better than the Statale (which in turn has its own flaws) is a matter of personal taste.

For a spectacular ascent and a thrilling descent, I would always recommend the route from Italy to France, if you can choose and plan it yourself. A beautiful valley with stunning views on narrow roads in Italy is a great place to enjoy at a slow pace. Wide, well-maintained roads in France make for a relatively safe descent.

A very quiet ski resort located in a very beautiful valley. The best thing is the surroundings.

Monte Isola also provides a popular car-free circular route around its perimeter, perfect for leisurely rides.
While many routes in the French Alps Isola region are challenging, Monte Isola in Italy is particularly well-suited for family-friendly, car-free cycling. Its narrow roads connecting charming villages are largely free of private cars, making it a safe and enjoyable environment for all ages. Similarly, the Tinée Valley near Isola, France, offers a cycle path largely separated from vehicular traffic, providing a safer option for families.
The best time to visit Isola for touring cycling largely depends on the specific region. For the high-altitude routes in the French Alps (Isola 2000), late spring to early autumn (June to September) is ideal, as mountain passes are typically clear of snow. For coastal and lake regions like Monte Isola or Izola, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, while summer can be warm but still enjoyable.
Public transport options vary by specific Isola location. For Monte Isola, ferries across Lake Iseo are the primary mode of transport and generally accommodate bikes, allowing easy access to the car-free island. In the French Alps, some regional buses might offer bike transport, but it's advisable to check local services in advance, especially for routes leading to high mountain passes.
Parking availability depends on the specific starting point. For routes in the French Alps, parking is often available at ski resorts like Auron or Isola 2000, or near major passes such as the Col de la Lombarde. When visiting Monte Isola, parking is available on the mainland at towns like Sulzano or Sale Marasino, from where you can take a ferry to the car-free island. Always check local regulations for parking fees and availability.
While popular routes like the Monte Isola perimeter can attract visitors, many of the more challenging routes in the French Alps, such as the Gardetta Hut – View of Lake Vinadio loop from Parcheggio, offer a more secluded experience due to their demanding nature. Exploring the less-traveled roads of the Tinée Valley also provides sublime views away from the main tourist hubs.
Yes, especially in the more populated areas. Monte Isola has numerous charming villages like Peschiera Maraglio and Sensole with cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses. In the French Alps, towns like Auron and Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, or the Isola 2000 resort, offer amenities for cyclists. Even on more remote routes, you might find mountain huts or small villages with basic services, but it's always wise to carry sufficient supplies.
