Tips from the Community

Franzl wandert 🥾
October 30, 2025, Hünstein

The Hünstein rises on a patch of grass next to the kindergarten. It is almost 2.80 meters high and weighs about 4 tons. It was likely erected by farmers of the Neolithic Wartberg culture (3500 to 2800 BC) for ritual purposes. The giant stone remained a landmark for millennia until a farmer deliberately buried it in his field in 1911. In 1932, local historian August Boley noticed it and re-erected it near its original location. A plaque next to the Hünstein commemorates August Boley.

The Church of the Cross is the Protestant church of Großenritte. This late Gothic building was completed in 1512 and likely replaced an older Romanesque church, about which no precise information exists. The year can be seen above the now-walled-up south portal. Inside, there is a late Gothic baptismal font and a pulpit from 1644. Paintings from before 1600 still adorn the walls. Unfortunately, I found the church closed.
