The Feldbahn in Augustfehn: A Journey Through Industrial History The Feldbahn in Augustfehn was a central means of transport that significantly shaped the region's industrial development. It was a narrow-gauge railway with a small locomotive and transport wagons. It connected the nearby moors with the Augustfehn steelworks and the navigable canal. Its history dates back to the 19th century and tells of technical innovation, economic importance, and the transformation brought about by modernization. The Origins of the Feldbahn The Feldbahn was developed in connection with the establishment of the Augustfehn steelworks. At a time when peat was of great importance as an energy source, the Feldbahn enabled the efficient transport of raw materials from the surrounding moors. With the creation of the Augustfehn train station, the narrow-gauge railway became an important means of transport from the steelworks to the railway siding. The peat was transported from the storage sheds near the dock to the steelworks, and then the finished steel products from the steelworks were transported to Augustfehn station, where the goods were then shipped by rail throughout Europe. The railway line had a gauge of 900 mm and a length of over three kilometers. It was equipped with six turntables and nine switches, underscoring its versatility for freight transport. Technical and Economic Challenges The infrastructure of the field railway had to be continually adapted to meet the demands of the growing steelworks. The substructure and rails, in particular, were reinforced to carry heavier loads. Originally, narrow-gauge locomotives were used, later supplemented by more modern vehicles. The connection to the canal made the field railway an indispensable lifeline for many businesses in Augustfehn I and Augustfehn II. The Decline of the Field Railway The increasing motorization in the 1930s gradually led to the decline of the field railway. The steelworks began using trucks for transport, which were more flexible and cost-effective. In the 1950s, the field railway was no longer economically viable and was closed down. Its era ended, but its traces remain vivid in the region's memories. A Symbol of Progress The Feldbahn was far more than a means of transportation. It symbolized industrial progress and the challenges of developing the northwest German moors. Although it no longer exists today, its significance for Augustfehn remains unforgotten. It is a piece of living history that recalls the emergence and heyday of industry in the Ammerland region.
