The Johannesbrücke (formerly also called Nepomukbrücke) in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, leads across the Rur river. The current Aachener Straße, then classified as Reichsstraße 264, as a street name, led from the Holztor at the height of Pleußmühle or Wallstraße to the border of the then independent municipality of Rölsdorf. The expansion of Aktienstraße, which was to lead from Düren to Aachen, began in 1822. On the west side of the Johannesbrücke there was a barrier with a boom, where a toll had to be paid to finance the costs of expansion and later maintenance with the revenue. A part of the eastern Johannesbrücke was presumably blown up by German troops themselves between December 7 and December 16, 1944, before the occupation of Düren by American troops, to make the advance of American troops more difficult. On February 25, 1945, American troops entered Düren for its occupation – after the bridge itself was partially destroyed, but a wooden bridge had been built on the still existing bridge piers. On May 16, 1950, the newly built Johannesbrücke was inaugurated by the then Finance Minister of the state of NRW, Heinrich Weitz.[1] The new reinforced concrete bridge had three openings. Its total width was 15.10 meters, and the construction costs amounted to 385,000 marks (197,000 euros). They were paid for, for the most part, by the state government. At the same time, the bridge also received a new statue of St. John of Nepomuk, which was created by the Düsseldorf sculptor Kurt Zimmermann and which in 2016 also adorns the last new bridge. At the feet of the bridge saint, as on many other bridges in Europe, there are also love padlocks attached, which lovers hang there. Over the years, the bridge had become dilapidated. In 2003, a temporary bridge was built next to the structure so that the new construction could begin next to it. On September 24, 2003, the old bridge collapsed into the Rur without external influence. The inauguration of the new bridge took place on December 21, 2004.
