No more water flows in the old streambed on Berrenrather Straße; the stream is diverted underground before the Cologne-Effen town limits. After rainfall, some surface water still collects. Otherwise, if you pass by regularly, you can watch the streambed slowly become overgrown.

The artificially created Deckstein Pond is located in the Lindenthal district and was built in the 19th century as part of the park design surrounding Villa Deckstein. Later, the area was opened to the public. I particularly like the chestnut avenue. When I'm there alone, I like to take the opportunity to pause and soak in the special atmosphere of this place.

The Duffesbach stream originates in Hürth and flows eastward. Its sources were located in Knappsack, west of Hürth, and were enclosed by Romans. Today, these sources are dry. It no longer receives spring water on the left bank of the Rhine due to open-cast mining and the associated lowering of the groundwater level. Beyond the A4 motorway, south of Berrenrather Straße, it enters the city of Cologne. Here, it flows above ground for approximately 600 meters parallel to Berrenrather Straße before entering a culvert at Militärring. Its subsequent underground course through Cologne can be traced by street names: Blaubach, Rothgerberbach, Mühlenbach, Weidenbach, and Am Duffesbach. (Source: steb-koeln.de)

The new building was erected between 1956 and 1958 according to the plans of Gottfried Böhm. It incorporated the neo-Baroque tower of the previous building, which, apart from this tower, had been destroyed in the Second World War. The exterior walls were cast from poured concrete, partly from rubble of the old church. The walls are adorned with a relief by Jochem Pechau depicting a flock of sheep with a shepherd.
