Berlin and country life? Potsdamer Platz and tranquility? Hard to imagine. Yet, in the municipality of Seedorf in the deepest Schleswig-Holstein, these words fit together like a hand in a glove. We heard that there is another, larger Berlin. A memorial stone at Potsdamer Platz also points to this. Seriously. That's what it's really called here. Just a few steps from the Kurfürstendamm. In the other Berlin, you have to walk four kilometers for that. The streets owe their names to the inhabitants who served in Berlin regiments during the imperial era. Since the village of 600 souls in the Segeberg district was first mentioned as early as 1215, it is considered the oldest Berlin in the world. To be precise, it is 22 years older than the capital. What is a bit lacking here, however, are the cultural and culinary offerings of the big brother. Or is it "big sister"? Never mind. Back to the topic.

Daily fresh eggs from happy chickens Sushi, street art and alternative artist quarters are sought in vain here in the countryside. Instead, Berlin scores in the municipality of Seedorf with a small wooden hut for self-caterers. In the middle of the village at Potsdamer Platz, everyone can stock up here with homemade jam and daily fresh eggs from happy chickens for a small donation. Unthinkable at the other Potsdamer Platz in the other Berlin. The main street here is incidentally called "Unter den Linden". Just without monuments, hotels and without the Brandenburg Gate.

And there are subtle differences when it comes to public transport. Instead of an S-Bahn, only a bus stops here. But also on weekends, twice a day. By the way, the "Potsdamer Straße" and "Unter den Linden" stops are only a minute apart by bus. Try to beat that time in the other Berlin. According to the memorial stone, which was unveiled on June 18, 1964, in memory of the divided capital, there are 357 kilometers between this idyllic, friendly patch of earth in the deepest Schleswig-Holstein and our capital. Not only in terms of distance, but also in terms of the feeling of life.

Built in 1583, the Seedorf gatehouse is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Schleswig-Holstein. The moats, ramparts and loopholes that still exist today reveal its former function as a well-protected castle complex. The former prison cells and torture chamber now house museum rooms, and concerts are held in the Knights' Hall. There are also regular guided tours of the museum. The newly designed exhibition focuses primarily on estate life in Seedorf and the stories of the owners' families. In addition to exhibits, the exhibition includes text panels created by a project group from Christian-Albrechts University. Estates of this period usually had a stately manor house, which in some places was also called a castle because of its magnificent architectural style. The lords of the manor lived in the manor house with their families. Behind the manor house there was an elaborate park or garden. In front of the manor house was the forecourt, which was surrounded by numerous stables and farm buildings. There were also apartments for the staff, a bakery, saddlery, etc., unless these were relocated to side farms. The front end was a gatehouse, which was intended to demonstrate the grandeur of the estate and protect it from intruders. The access roads to the gatehouse were planted with avenues. This made the estate's claim to power over the region visible from afar. https://www.holsteinischeschweiz.de/poi/seedorfer-torhaus

The Seedorf manor house was built in 1697 under Hans Blome, and the building was expanded through extensive renovations around 1750 under the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The classicist building reached its final state in 1829. The interior still contains the beautiful rococo stucco and classicist wall paintings. https://www.herrenhaus-seedorf.com/

The Seedorf manor house was built in 1697 by the Blome family and the Danish King Friedrich II and is located on the southern edge of the "Holstein Switzerland" cultural landscape. In an idyllic location, directly on Lake Seedorf, the former estate is surrounded by unique 300-year-old avenues.
