Rifugio Savoia is located at an altitude of 2,534 meters on the picturesque Nivolet plateau, right in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park. Born from the renovation of a historic hunting lodge of King Vittorio Emanuele II dating back to 1860, today it offers 40 beds and a welcoming kitchen with typical dishes of the Aosta Valley tradition.

The road that draws an "S" on the dam is very scenic. All that remains is to tackle the last hairpin bends to the top and then enjoy the most beautiful view of the Alps and perhaps the world...

This is the photo that every cyclist wants to have of the Colle del Nivolet! The climb to the Colle del Nivolet offers many opportunities to put your foot down and enjoy wonderful panoramic views, especially from Ceresole Reale. In my opinion, the best panoramic view is from this viewing point / balcony that is located just 200 meters from the top of the pass. It is probably the most photographed view of the Nivolet and the one that we have been thrilled with when seeing it in some magazine or website. There are no words to explain the enjoyment and how one savours the views of Lake Agnel and Serrú, of the mountains, of the alpine passes on foot that cross to France, of the less frequent snowfields... WONDERFUL!

You can expect to see the striking turquoise-blue waters of Lake Agnel, a series of high-altitude lakes like Lake Serrù and Nivolet Lakes, and breathtaking panoramic mountain views, including the Aiguilles Rousses. Yes, there are several circular routes accessible by bus. For example, the Lake Serrù – Nivolet Lakes loop from Colle del Nivolet offers a challenging 16.5 km experience, while the Lake Serrù – Lake Serrù loop from Colle del Nivolet is a moderate 4.3 km option.

However, during peak summer weekends, the road is closed to private vehicles, making bus access an excellent option. Outside of this period, especially from mid-October to mid-June, heavy snow closes the road, making bus access and hiking difficult or impossible.
While many routes are moderate to difficult due to the high-alpine terrain, there are some easier options suitable for families. It's always recommended to check the specific route details, including distance and elevation gain, to ensure it matches your family's fitness level. The Lake Serrù – Lake Serrù loop from Colle del Nivolet is a moderate, shorter option that might be suitable.
Gran Paradiso National Park has specific regulations regarding dogs to protect its wildlife. Generally, dogs are allowed on a leash in certain areas and on specific trails, but restrictions may apply, especially in core protected zones. Always check the latest park regulations before planning your hike with a dog.
Given the high-alpine environment, even for moderate trails, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for changing mountain weather, rain gear, sun protection, sufficient water, snacks, and a map or GPS device. For difficult routes, alpine experience and additional safety equipment are recommended.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 2500 ratings. Reviewers often praise the stunning panoramic views, the unique turquoise waters of the lakes, the sense of wilderness within Gran Paradiso National Park, and the diverse range of trails that cater to different skill levels.
Absolutely. For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, routes like From Nivolet Lakes to Taou Blanc — Gran Paradiso National Park (13.7 km, difficult) or the Losere Lakes – Lillet Lake loop from Colle del Nivolet (19.8 km, difficult) offer significant elevation gain and breathtaking high-alpine scenery.
While the high-alpine environment means fewer commercial establishments, you might find refugios (mountain huts) or small eateries in key access points like Colle del Nivolet or Ceresole Reale, especially during the main hiking season. It's always advisable to carry enough food and water for your hike, as options can be limited.
