The lake, which I had never heard of before my Pyrenees tour, is obviously a "must see" in this region. Together with the waterfall at the end of the lake, it is also a truly worthwhile hiking destination.

While the high-alpine setting means direct public transport to every trailhead can be limited, some starting points in larger villages like Loudenvielle or Germ may be accessible by local bus services. Parking is typically available at the starting points of many trails, especially in the villages like Loudenvielle or Germ. For routes leading deeper into the mountains, designated parking areas are usually provided near popular trailheads. However, during peak season, these can fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended.
While popular routes can see more visitors, the extensive network of trails around Lac de Caillaouas offers opportunities to find quieter paths. Exploring trails that venture slightly further from the main access points or choosing to hike during off-peak hours (early morning or late afternoon) can help you find a more serene experience. Look for routes that might be a bit longer or have a slightly higher elevation gain, as these tend to be less frequented by casual walkers.
Given the high-alpine environment, it's crucial to dress in layers. Even on sunny days, temperatures can change rapidly. We recommend sturdy hiking shoes, waterproof and windproof outer layers, and warm clothing. Don't forget sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and plenty of water, as the altitude can make you dehydrate faster.
