Stenio Melani
June 24, 2026, Medieval Village of Capalbio

Capalbio is a charming medieval village in the Maremma region of Tuscany, known as the "little Athens". Characterized by a tangle of narrow alleys, double defensive walls that can be walked upon, and breathtaking views stretching to the sea, it offers a perfect blend of history, art, and gastronomy.

Industrial archaeological find, former site area is located entirely within the coastal lagoon of Orbetello; provisionally perimetered in 2002, for a total area of approximately 336 hectares of which approximately 64 are land areas, following the results of the environmental characterizations carried out, it was redefined to include the entire lagoon area, for an extension of approximately 200 hectares , involving the municipalities of Orbetello and Monte Argentario. The site includes both areas of public competence and areas of private competence. The extraordinary resources and the particular territorial configuration have determined, starting from the end of the 19th century, the development of historic industrial initiatives. On the Argentario promontory, the exploitation of magnesiferous iron from the Passo mines, already active from the years 1872 - 1874, began and the sulfuric acid chemical plant was built (Orbetello airport area). In the area adjacent to Orbetello Scalo, the chemical plant was opened in 1906 for the production of chemical products, glue and fertilizers. These are the systems of the former Sitoco plant. The plant, now decommissioned, first owned by Montecatini, then by Montedison and then by Sitoco (Federconsorzi), has belonged to the company Laguna Azzurra S.r.l. since April 2004. The production process, used for about half a century, consisted of the production of chemical fertilizers by attacking raw materials with sulfuric acid, produced in the same factory starting from pyrite with the lead chamber system. The pyrite ash was accumulated in the land surrounding the plant and in the lagoon area adjacent to the plant, as well as used as material for the construction of ponds, through the construction of embankments. In the 1970s, once the production of sulfuric acid ceased, the activity continued with the production of fertilizers. Around the 1930s, the dynamite, explosives and ammunition factory was also added, with a factory built upstream from Orbetello. The mining activity ended in 1974, while the industrial activities indicated above ended between 1990 and 2006.
