⚓ The Story of the "Marie" Construction & Use: The motor vessel was built in the Netherlands in 1928. It was a typical coastal motor vessel (coastal motor vessel) with a cargo capacity of approximately 50 tons and primarily transported wheat and coal on the Elbe River between Hamburg and Cuxhaven. The Disaster: On March 25, 1945, shortly before the end of World War II, the Marie struck a British sea mine on the Elbe River (near Krautsand). The ship sank immediately. Captain Ferdinand Gustafson, who was alone on board at the time, perished in the disaster. Rediscovery & Salvage: The wreck was discovered by chance during surveying work in 1979. Since it posed an obstacle to shipping, it was salvaged. Thanks to a seal found inside, the ship could be definitively identified as the Marie.

🚢 The wreck of the coastal motor vessel Marie is an impressive relic of maritime history that can be visited on land today. It serves as a memorial to the dangers of the sea and is closely linked to the history of Cuxhaven.
