The highest mountain in the South Harz, whose name is traced back to a charcoal burner named Stöber from Wieda, was once called the "Brocken of the South Harz". The first inn on the summit was built in 1875/76 by the innkeeper from Wieda, Carl Mast, the uncle of Wilhelm Mast, founder of the Wolfenbüttel company Jägermeister. The lodge with a tower was a popular destination for hikers, including the poet Wilhelm Raabe. After Carl Mast's death, the inn burned down in 1886. But as early as 1890, the hotelier August Panse was able to open a new building. The "Berghotel Stöberhai" developed into a widely known tourist hotel, which could be reached via the "carriage road" by horse-drawn carriages and sleighs, and later also by automobiles. In winter, the so-called "footpath to Wieda" was also used as a toboggan run ("Hörnerschlitten"). Popular landlords later included Leo Wernsdorfer (1921-1931), Carl Meyer (1931-1942) and, after World War II, the Interzonenbus entrepreneur Paul Kühn (1951-1965). After later changes of ownership and periods of vacancy, the building burned down to the foundations in the spring of 1980. Source: Information board on site

On the meadow next to the hut, deer stood in a line as I pressed the stamp into the booklet... on the paths around, with luck, you can find small red iron stones

The Snoopy bench in front of the cabin makes it interesting.

A somewhat arbitrarily chosen location. The view towards the Brocken and Würmberg mountains is good, but similar to other paths in the area.
