It is a border pillar on the old border between Electoral Saxony and Upper Lusatia. We cannot explain why it was set in 1770. At that time, Upper Lusatia already belonged to Saxony (since 1635). However, until recently, several border towns were divided into a Meißen and a Bohemian/Lusatia side and partly also administratively separated. A similar column, also from 1770, still stands in Ringenhain. The many smaller boundary stones with the crossed bishop's crooks (as in the city coat of arms) marked the boundaries of the later Bischofswerda city forest and were set in the 18th century. All these boundary stones, as well as the boundary column, stand on the historical boundary between the former diocese of Meissen and what was then Bohemian Upper Lusatia. In the first Upper Lusatia border document from 1241, the course of the border between Bishop Bruno and King Wenzel I was determined on the Königstein. At that time, however, it was not marked by boundary stones.
