After a long back and forth, the new rest stop for cyclists in Wittgensdorf finally has a permanent operator. Oliver Oertel plans to open the so-called "Färbergarten" on the Chemnitztalradweg every weekend - provided the weather cooperates. There are several food and drink stands where cyclists can fortify themselves. It took over four years for the rest stop to finally be approved. Due to flood protection issues, the state directorate had even imposed a construction freeze in the meantime. https://www.radiochemnitz.de/beitrag/fahrradrastplatz-in-wittgensdorf-jetzt-regelmaessig-geoeffnet-891119/

The 🟣 PURPLE PATH 🟣 is a sculpture trail connecting Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025, with 38 towns and municipalities in the region. Numerous artists have contributed works of various kinds, telling a previously untold story of the region. More information at https://chemnitz2025.de/purple-path/ Via Lewandowski “Television/Lightning” Taurastein Tower, Burgstädt “Colored, irregularly pulsating light can be seen flickering from the upper room of the Taurastein Tower at night, visible from afar. Built in 1912 as a lookout and water tower, the flickering light from the tower’s 16 arched windows was generated by the multimedia artist Via Lewandowski, born in Dresden in 1963 and now living in Berlin, from sequences of films that can be suggested via the website. Reduced to average values of color temperature and brightness, a media-like lightning effect, detached from the cinematic narrative, sweeps across the treetops of the Wettinhain at night, illuminated by 16 LED lamps. During the day, the light installation is transformed by a sound collage. A four-digit code, randomly generated on a display above the tower entrance, presents visitors with an enigmatic…” Message. The ascent of 163 steps to the lantern room is accompanied by colored light and sounds: sometimes a soft rumble and trickle, sometimes a loud thunderclap and crash. The sounds emanate from a brick and tiled water tank, used as a reservoir until 1996 and now empty, via eight channels into the 39-meter-high tower. The artist recorded and technically modified them underground in the former tin mine of the Ehrenfriedersdorf show mine. They are now reflected aurally above ground at the height of the tower. Lewandowsky's site-specific and conceptual light and sound installation can itself be understood as a kind of spatialized film, which can be experienced upon entering the tower, climbing the steps, "watching" it from the viewing platform, and even at night when gazing at the flickering light across its many channels, levels, and paths. Stories and history, places and times of regional and media history are interwoven in such a way that an almost organic whole emerges from the interplay of sound and light, communicating with visitors from top to bottom and engaging all their senses within the elongated structure of the Taurastein Tower. The old tracks are used for short railcar rides and are well worth a visit. From the opposite side of the station, you can get a good view of the tracks.
