Beautiful little chapel from 1902 renovated in 2002. Quiet and relaxing place along the Stations of the Cross leading to the Klippeneck.

Very nice hiking parking lot at the edge of the forest. Numerous hikes and bike tours can be started from here. About 1 km away is the country inn Waldeck.

A detour to the Kraftstein ruins is definitely worth it. There is a small model of the castle, an information board, a bench and even a small remnant of the wall. The further descent is actually not worth it (see Turbo dated December 27, 2022).

A popular meeting place with a large parking lot just steps away from the Knopfmacherfelsen (button maker rock). Before starting a hike, you can use the restroom and enjoy a good meal at the end. There is no closing day. A little about the history of the house: One day, when the Stuttgart architect Karl Schill was visiting his fistball teammate and then mayor of Fridingen, he discovered the beautiful viewpoint at the Knopfmacherfelsen (button maker rock). The idea of building a café-restaurant there was immediately born. He quickly designed and built it, and it opened on May 15, 1959. In April 1981, the Knopfmacher mountain lodge was taken over by his son Reiner Schill. On May 17, 2019, the 60th anniversary was celebrated. We, Tobias (Reiner's son) and Katia, have been running the Knopfmacher mountain lodge since 2011, in the third generation, in the spirit of Karl and Reiner. We are supported by our sons Dennis and Jannik Schill.

Tuttlingen offers a wide array of hiking opportunities, with over 960 easy routes and more than 830 moderate routes, many of which are suitable for families. In total, you'll find over 1800 hiking trails in the region, ensuring plenty of options for all ages and abilities.
The region is rich in natural wonders. A highlight is the Danube Sinkhole, where the Danube river disappears underground during dry periods. You can experience this phenomenon on routes like the DonauWelle: Donauversickerung (Danube Sinkhole). The Höwenegg Crater Lake is another fascinating natural monument to discover.
Yes, many of the trails are designed as circular routes, perfect for family outings. The DonauWelle: Kraftstein-Runde – Auf der Albhochfläche is a great example, offering views of the unique juniper heath landscapes of the Swabian Alb. Another option is the DonauWelle: Alter Schäferweg – Im Tal der Lippach, which takes you through the scenic Lippach valley.
Many trails in the Tuttlingen region are dog-friendly, allowing your furry family members to join. However, it's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature reserves, near livestock, or in areas with wildlife. Always check local signage for specific rules.
The best seasons for family hiking in Tuttlingen are typically spring and autumn. During these times, temperatures are mild, and the natural scenery is particularly vibrant with blooming flowers or colorful foliage. Summer can also be pleasant, but remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection.
While many trails are generally family-friendly, routes specifically designed for strollers or toddlers with very smooth, flat paths might be less common on the more adventurous DonauWellen trails. Look for shorter, well-maintained paths, often found closer to towns or along riverbanks, which are usually more accessible. Some areas also feature 'Kindererlebnispfade' (children's adventure trails) which are often designed with younger children in mind.
Many of the popular DonauWellen trails, such as the Danube Wave – Danube Rocks Tour, pass through or near villages where you can find local restaurants, cafes, or traditional inns. It's a good idea to check the route details beforehand to plan your refreshment stops, especially with children.
The hiking trails around Tuttlingen are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars from over 11,000 reviews. Hikers often praise the diverse landscapes, well-marked paths, and the unique natural phenomena like the Danube Sinkhole, making it a memorable experience for families.
Absolutely! The Lemberg Tower offers fantastic panoramic views, and the prominent Honberg Castle ruins dominate the city's skyline. A moderate hike, often referred to as the 'Honberg-Runde,' leads directly to the fortress, providing great views over Tuttlingen and the surrounding landscape.
Tuttlingen and its surrounding villages are generally well-connected by local bus and train services. Many trailheads for the DonauWellen routes are accessible via public transport, making it convenient for families without a car. We recommend checking the local public transport schedules for specific routes and starting points before your hike.
For a comfortable family hike, we recommend packing essentials such as sufficient water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), rain gear (even on sunny days, weather can change), a first-aid kit, and sturdy, comfortable footwear. Don't forget a camera to capture the beautiful scenery and any specific items your children might need for entertainment or comfort.
