Danube Wave – Danube Rocks Tour

Hiking

This hike lives up to its title “Danube Wave”: You hike through the unique landscape of the Danube’s breakthrough valley in a beautiful up and down. Beautiful views of the river, the green forest and the bright rocks await you. You will quickly understand why the area is also called the Swabian Grand Canyon.

The starting point is right at the “Knopfmacherfelsen” bus stop. You can reach this with bus line 315 from Fridingen. Numerous viewing rocks lie ahead of you over a 16-kilometer stretch. So it’s best to pack some provisions, then you can choose one of the viewing points for a long snack break. How about the Roggenbusch viewing point, for example?

In addition to the fairytale landscape, you also hike past the Kallenberg castle ruins and enjoy a dreamy view of Bronnen Castle. One hundred percent Danube Valley enjoyment!

Special note:
In spring and after heavy rainfall, it may not be possible to cross the Danube on the stepping stones at the Jägerhaus without getting your feet wet. If in doubt, please find out beforehand.

You can also find current information about the passability of the Danube at the Jägerhaus on the Internet at www.donaubergland.de, www.jaegerhaus.de or by calling: 07466 254 (Gasthaus Jägerhaus). If you still want to do the entire tour in the event of the water level being too high, we recommend following the Donauberglandweg from the Jägerhaushöhle to Beuron and from there on the left bank of the Danube back to the Knopfmacherfelsen. This extends the route by around 4.5 kilometers.

Stiegelesfelsen Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Stiegelesfels rock formation is located near the Mattheiser Chapel, offering a breathtaking view of the Danube Valley. A tent camp is set up in the meadow below during the summer.

Mattheiser Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Many inscriptions were embedded in the wall around the chapel, as well as the names of those who died in the First World War.

Anyone who feels the breath of history in old walls will also feel at home here. The Burgrest is not oversized, but it is a nice place for a short break. I particularly like the idyllic stone stairs that lead from the hiking path up to the castle gate.

If you continue on the hiking trail to the barbecue area, you will find the entrance to a small through cave via a small path, which you are welcome to pass through. Beyond this, however, caution is advised, because at the edge of the narrow meadow under the castle wall, it goes steeply downhill.

View of Schloss Bronnen

Highlight • Viewpoint

How about a little break here? You can make yourself comfortable on the bench and let your gaze wander over the valley to Bronnen Castle.

Bronnen Castle

Highlight • Castle

Bronnen Castle is an impressive building that has been privately owned since 1950 and is permanently inhabited (therefore unfortunately no access or only up to the garden gate in front of the bridge). Great photos possible from every side.

Berghaus Knopfmacher with attached hotel. We recommend. Great view from the restaurant or terrace. Open daily except in winter due to weather conditions

Highlight • Viewpoint

A breathtaking view down to the Danube. The large parking lot next door is ideal as a starting and ending point for a hike. The restaurant is also perfect for finishing off a tour.

A very beautiful tour that is particularly attractive in winter weather. Due to slippery conditions, caution is currently advised when descending from Bronnen Castle and crossing the Danube.

Today I did the Danube Waves premium hiking trail.
Danube Valley is always great in autumn.

A varied tour. Strenuous, but always rewarded with fantastic views. 😊 The Jägerhaus is worth a rest, but the Knopfmacherfelsen restaurant is also recommended. We enjoyed an ice cream at the Vesperstube Ziegelhütte. There are only vending machines here, but there is a huge selection. 👍🏻We will definitely plan another tour around the Danube Valley soon. 🚶🚶🏼‍♀️😎

Today a great Komoot hike in the Danube Valley
Top organized by our Patrick👍
saw a lot during the constant ups and downs 👍
and of course the obligatory EKS was also included at the end of the round🤗

We started at the Knopfmacherfelsen and wanted to save the view from there until the end. Unfortunately it started to rain when we got back to the car. It felt like it went back and forth and up and down forever ... But it was worth it. However, the tour without leaves on the trees is certainly even more worth …

DonauWelle 🌊 is always a great place to walk 🥾 / or eat 🍰 😋

A really nice round with the Albverein Meßkirch 👌

The seating options for a short break are very limited. What a pity.
