The Ritterstein marks the location of a watering hole where animals were once watered. Its name derives from the former Otterberg monastery property. The cattle watering hole was located on the old road that connected Perlenburg, Breitenau, Espensteig, Aspach, Otterberger Sohl, Stall, and Waldleiningen. The forest area, along with the Hilsberger Hof, once a Franconian royal estate and later called the Stüterhof, was a gift from the Leiningen family to the Cistercian monastery of Otterberg. The gift was confirmed in 1195. The Otterberg forest area, later called the Stüterwald, was very remote for the monks and was only accessible via the old road mentioned above. The monks of the monastery ran a horse breeding business there. When the monastery reached its financial end, Elector Ludwig III (1378-1436) acquired the farm and the associated Otterberg forest area in 1426.

Whether this was a shortcut is debatable...most people are familiar with black Komoot trails. But it was definitely worth it!

Knight stones have nothing in common with a knight. The stones were named after forestry director Karl Albrecht von Ritter, who is the founding chairman of the Palatinate Forest Association, known as "PWV" for short.

There was a watering place for cattle here. The name is reminiscent of the old Otterberg monastery property. The Cistercian monastery had a large forest property there.
