Climbing up Mount Tamalpais, you'll find many great spots for admiring the scenery, but this one particularly struck me because, almost immersed in nature, you can see the city skyline in the distance. I found it so moving that I stopped my bike and stood there contemplating the landscape for a few minutes. The climb is a bit steep, but it's definitely worth it!

Mount Tam East Peak offers some of the most majestic views north of the bay. From this vantage point, you can see all of Marin, along with Point Reyes to the north and Oakland and San Francisco to the south. The stunning panoramic vistas make the journey well worth the effort. There are restrooms and picnic tables, ideal for a snack or lunch while you capture some incredible photos.

Fern Creek Trail is an excellent trail – scenic views, technical underfoot, loose at times, mind your head on low branches. Close to the bottom there have been caribou land slips and tree falls over the years that have meant the trail is rerouted up and over ever so slightly. Absolutely adore this trail.

The Pantoll Campground is a First-come/first-serve site in Mt. Tamalpais State Park. Each site has a barbeque grill, a fire ring, and a picnic table. You need to pay for the site at the Ranger Station as you enter the park.

Now open for more than a hundred years, this inn welcomes visitors high on the flanks of Mount Tamalpais. The guestrooms mostly face east, but the grounds include great vantages to the west over the Bay. There's also a restaurant, and this has been voted one of the most romantic spots in the Bay Area several times over.

There are several dedicated no-traffic touring cycling routes within the Bolinas Lagoon Open Space Preserve area, offering a range of experiences. Currently, komoot features 5 such routes, with options for both moderate and difficult rides.
The routes offer a diverse mix of terrain. You can expect coastal environments with views of the Pacific Ocean and Bolinas Lagoon, as well as routes that transition into open, grassy hillsides and even redwood forests. While the core preserve area doesn't allow cycling, surrounding routes provide stunning natural features. Some routes, like the Olema Valley South loop, feature significant elevation changes, while others offer more gradual climbs.
While the routes listed are generally moderate to difficult, the region offers accessible options. The Marin Coastal Bike Route, for example, is an easy 7.6-mile path providing beautiful views of the lagoon. For a moderate komoot route, consider the Randall Trail loop, which is shorter at 7 km.
The Bolinas Lagoon area is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-June) is particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing, as it's a prime time for migratory birds and harbor seals. The coastal climate generally offers pleasant cycling conditions, though it's always wise to check local weather forecasts, especially for fog or wind, before heading out.
Many routes offer spectacular views. You can enjoy expansive vistas of the Bolinas Lagoon itself, the Pacific Ocean, and even the San Francisco Bay from higher elevations. Specific highlights include the Shoreline Highway 1, which provides breathtaking coastal scenery, and areas near Martin Griffin Preserve, known for its natural beauty. The 'Seven Sisters' section of Ridgecrest Boulevard, accessible via some longer routes, is renowned for its panoramic views.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops. For example, the Olema Valley South loop from Martin Griffin Preserve and the Twin Knolls – Mount Tamalpais Summits loop offer circular journeys, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your path.
Given the mix of paved roads and multi-use trails, a touring bicycle is generally suitable. However, some routes may include sections that are better suited for gravel bikes due to varied surfaces. For example, the Bolinas Ridge Trail, while popular, is a dirt double track and not recommended for road bikes. Always check the route details on komoot for specific surface information.
Parking is available at various access points around the Bolinas Lagoon Open Space Preserve. For routes like the Coastal Trail to Cardiac Hill loop, you might find parking near Muir Beach. For other routes, starting points often have designated parking areas, but it's advisable to check specific route descriptions for the most convenient options.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning coastal and forest scenery, the challenging climbs that reward with panoramic views, and the opportunity for wildlife spotting, especially migratory birds and harbor seals in the lagoon. The sense of being away from traffic on these dedicated routes is also a frequently mentioned highlight.
Yes, the charming seaside villages of Bolinas and Stinson Beach, located near the lagoon, offer opportunities for cyclists to stop for lunch, coffee, or other refreshments. These towns provide a welcome break and a chance to experience local culture during your ride.
While public transport options directly to all trailheads might be limited, some routes are accessible from areas with public transit connections. For detailed information on public transport routes and schedules to the Bolinas Lagoon vicinity, it's best to consult local transit authority websites.
Generally, no specific permits are required for cycling on the public roads and designated multi-use trails in the Bolinas Lagoon Open Space Preserve area.
