May 11, 2026, Information Board Agrippa Road (Römerstraße) near Dahlem

Text. Information board: The Roman road embankment of the "Agrippa Road" near Dahlem runs through the forest along the ridge line between the so-called Heidenköpfe and is still preserved today as an approximately 2.7 km long, clearly recognizable earth dam. It is a section of the Agrippa Road, one of the oldest and most important supra-regional roads in the northwestern Roman Empire. It connected the two important provincial capitals of Cologne (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium) and Trier (Augusta Treverorum) and represented a central traffic axis for the military, administration, and trade. The preserved section in the Dahlem forest shows the course of the Roman route in the terrain and is part of today's hiking trail network, including in the area of the Moorpfad (Moor Trail) and in connection with other regional routes.

Along the Glaadtbach, there were once small water-powered mill sites, hence the name ‘Mühlenpfad’ (Mill Path). Such stream mills were typical in the Kalkeifel since the Middle Ages. The fact that today one finds no visible traces of the former mills in the Glaadtbach valley is actually rather normal than unusual for the small Eifel stream mills (grain mills, small oil mills, or combined farm mills).

The Glaadtbachtal is a narrow, wooded valley stream that is traversed by the Glaadtbach, a small tributary of the Kyll. Topographically, the valley belongs to the Kalkeifel. Characteristic of this valley landscape are: moist floodplain areas, alder and birch swamp forests, spring-rich slope zones, small-scale moors and wet meadows, as well as quiet forest paths with little settlement. Together with the Wasserdell, it forms one of the ecologically most valuable wetlands in the region.

At the end of the moorland path, well-maintained hiking trails lead through the adjacent forest.

A small but beautiful wooden path across the moorland, with good information panels.

There are only a few trees that have grown so crookedly, but the path runs between them and they are special to see.
