At the North Harbor in Duisburg-Walsum, a steel lift bridge spans the turning basin. It was built between 1934 and 1936 along with the harbor, which served as the industrial port for the Walsum colliery. From here, coal and mining materials were transported onto the Rhine; until the mine closed in 2008, two to four million tons were shipped annually. Its design has a practical purpose: because the bridge deck can be raised, ships can enter the harbor even during high water. In March 1945, retreating troops blew up the bridge, and it was rebuilt in 1950. Today, it is a listed monument, and its glazed portals define the harbor's appearance. The harbor now supplies the neighboring Walsum power plant.

Right through the industrial area, yet surrounded by greenery. One of the many old courses of the Emscher River accompanies the gravel biker.
