The war memorial of Stekene is a protected monument. It is therefore quite imposing. It consists of a tall bluestone column with a statue of an angel at the top. On the front of the column is "To our fallen soldiers", the names of the victims are on the sides. At the top of the column, a draped flag with the motto "Freedom or Death" can be seen, and on the left side is the coat of arms of Stekene. Initially, it stood in the middle of the market square of Stekene. In 1937, the monument was moved to its current location, in the small park in front of the town hall. It was restored in 2013. The Stekene town hall is a Neo-Gothic building from 1882-1883, designed by architect Edmond de Perre Montigny. It has been a protected monument since 1995. In 2000 it was restored. Characteristic of this building are the "Brugse traveeën", the pointed arch niches that extend over more than one storey. In 1994, a new wing was added along Stadionstraat. Around 1200, there would already have been a church here in Stekene. Around 1220, a new church was built, probably Romanesque, for 1500 believers. In 1548, the church was enlarged with three choirs and two transepts, accommodating approximately 2350 believers. Over the centuries, many changes and renovations were carried out. In 1897 and 1898, the church underwent a thorough renovation, an extension, and a restoration. The church was also extended by 9 meters. The architect was Julius Goethals. In 1986 and 1987, a portion of the roofs was repaired; in 1998, the windows and facades followed. In 2017-2018, the tower received a completely new spire. From 2022 to 2024, the roofs were thoroughly restored. Source: herita.be

Dressing up as a devout pilgrim with the promise of undertaking a penitential journey is the ultimate (fox's) trick that Reynaert pulls off in the famous epic. He has barely left King Nobel's court, where he made confessions and expressed remorse, before he continues his atrocities. No devotion, no penance.

The ter Beuken city park originally started as a landscaped garden around Villa ter Beuken. Every two years, it is transformed into a Temporary Centre for Spatial Art. Since 1981, the city, in collaboration with the Municipal Commission for Artistic Heritage, has been organizing open-air exhibitions there. And... yes, there are a few level differences in the park, which make the park extra attractive for both walkers and mountain bikers. Source: lokeren.be
