A Unique Monument to Charity Did you know that the castle church and the almshouses form a closely connected ensemble? Peter Rantzau had the two rows of white houses built between 1594 and 1596, at the same time as the church. The Connection: The arrangement is no accident – the almshouses flank the church like "outstretched arms." They were intended to make the Christian commandment of love for one's neighbor visible right next to the house of worship. The Function: While the church was built for the salvation of souls, the almshouses served as one of the first social foundations in the region. The 17 small residential units provided accommodation for the poor, the sick, and the elderly. Today: What is special about this ensemble is its continuity. Even today, over 400 years later, the apartments are still used by the parish for people in social need.

The path is somewhat adventurous, going under the railway line - with curves and zigzags.

The "Ahrensburg Palace Ensemble Cultural Experience Area" became a bit prettier in 2014 – and more stable. For all its romanticism, the things surrounding the city's landmark must also be safe for traffic. And that's what it is now: the wooden bridge that leads from the palace island to the Bagatelle, which was renovated for €312,000. The Aktivregion Alsterland contributed the lion's share, €140,000, and the Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Holstein (Sparkasse Holstein Savings Bank) contributed €66,000. The palace foundation, which is in a rather less than rosy financial situation, also contributed €38,000 to the renovation. Now the small structure shines in new splendor. The dilapidated tropical wood was replaced with larch. Only the substructure remained intact. No one could say how old the crossing from the palace island to the "mainland" was. But landscape architect Annette Kirchgeorg left no doubt that the new bridge won't last forever. "It will probably last 20 years." With renovation costs of more than €300,000, this is a remarkably short period of time, which clearly illustrates why the more than 400-year-old castle is indeed so valuable. https://www.abendblatt.de/region/stormarn/article125477990/Neue-Bruecke-fuehrt-zum-Schloss.html
