After Meppel became ecclesiastically independent in 1422, construction of its own parish church began the following year. The name Mariakerk (St. Mary's Church) also dates from that time. https://www.grotekerkmeppel.nl/de-kerk/

The tea dome from around 1840 originally stood outside the park on the other side of the Werkhorstbrug. He had to leave there when the Reest was 'straightened' in the mid-1950s. This gave the park some more ground. The old dome had come out of the war badly and then been neglected. The Nature Conservation Guard made sure that the dome was not lost to Meppel. The dome was demolished with combined (volunteer) forces and rebuilt under expert supervision in the Wilhelminapark. Source: http://www.100jaarwilhelminapark.nl/theekoepel.
