The railway line from Niederwiesa to Hainichen began operating in 1869. At the same time, the station building was constructed in a style typical for Saxony at that time. In 1874, the line was extended to Roßwein, reaching a total length of 37.5 km. After 124 years of operation, Deutsche Bahn AG discontinued rail service to Roßwein in 1998. Passenger service between Hainichen and Chemnitz was resumed on December 10, 2004, by Citybahn Chemnitz, following extensive renovation of the section of track. In 1935, the members of the "Gellerttische," an association of former residents of Hainichen, presented the town with a flower clock. It was placed in the town park near the main entrance. Hainichen clockmaker Paul Emmrich, along with manufacturer Erich Fiedler from the Meissen tower clock factory, was commissioned to procure and install the clock. The clock mechanism was connected to the hand shaft and a counterweight by a linkage. Due to its maximum running time of 30 hours, the clock has been wound daily from spring to autumn ever since. The planting of the flowerbed was formerly the responsibility of the town's head gardeners.
