August 6, 2026, Nordhusen Church Ruins

The stately 17-meter-high transverse tower, built of rubble masonry, is reminiscent of a settlement that was important 800 years ago and became a ghost town as early as the Middle Ages. Further evidence of this is provided by a partially preserved hollow way and the remains of a watermill that burned down in 1843. The Nordhusen ruin is a widely visible sign of the former settlement of Nordhusen. It was first documented in 1218, but fell into disuse by the end of the 15th century as the focus of settlement shifted to Hundisburg. Only the Romanesque-built west transverse tower of the former village church has survived to this day. The ruin is one of the west transverse towers typical of the Magdeburger Börde. Its ground plan dimensions of 11.80 m by 5.20 m and its height of 17 m indicate that Nordhusen was once an important place. The Nordhusen ruin is a stop on the "Straße der Romanik" (Route of the Romanesque). The historically significant and touristically popular cultural route connects 88 buildings in 72 locations in Saxony-Anhalt and is integrated into the European network "Transromanica". https://www.haldensleben.de/Kultur-Tourismus/Tourismus/Sehensw%C3%BCrdigkeiten/

Climb the highest peak between Magdeburg and the Baltic Sea During this mountain hike, you'll cover a roughly 6 km long trail with gradients of up to 16%. It takes two to three hours and is led by expert mountain guides from the Zielitz Miners' Association. During the tour, the mountain guides will provide information about local mining – from the raw salt extracted underground to the finished product – and scenic attractions. After the approximately 3 km climb, you'll reach the summit plateau. From here, you'll enjoy impressive views of the surrounding villages, Europe's largest waterway junction, and the largest continuous linden forest. With a bit of luck, the weather will be clear, so the view even extends as far as the Brocken (Harz) Mountains. Source: https://www.kpluss.com/de-de/ueber-ks/standorte/europa/zielitz/kalimandscharo/#bergtour The mountain tours take place every Saturday at 3:00 PM from the beginning of May to October. No registration is required.

The former manor church was built around 1500 as a simple fieldstone structure with a thatched roof. During the Thirty Years' War, the church had to be rebuilt twice. At its core, it is a medieval church.

At a good 40 meters above sea level and directly on the banks of the Elbe River, a high medieval residential tower, the Klutturm, stands, and right next to it a neo-Gothic castle. These are the remains of the former castle complex and later the Rogätz manor.
