For those not interested in the viewing platform at Michelwiese [https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/3329681?ref=whd&t_s=referral&t_cid=highlight_share&t_ref_username=35428373971], this path offers a nice route to cycle past the biotope.

It's nice to see that the newly erected viewing platform apparently receives more attention than was the case in the past. This is evident from the expansion with information boards and the regular influx of visitors arriving on foot, with various types of bikes, and also by car... By the way: The picture of the front of the new platform, which I took at the time without fear of penalty, I would no longer take today, as the meadow is now fenced off and entering it is strictly forbidden under threat of penalty. There is also said to be a camera...

Update 11/2025: From about halfway between Ehlershausen and Großmoor, the asphalt is very difficult to ride on with a road bike; it's basically just a bumpy series of small patches... Horrible... (Tip: Maybe those responsible for road maintenance should get on a road bike and "test" the "quality 🙈" of the road several times. 😉)

The platform is back up. I think it's beautiful, two levels with a great view of the biotope. Definitely worth a stop. Edit: just saw Tobi's photos!

Many thanks to @Peter Löhr, who informed us via my MTB highlight https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/3329681?ref=whd (which, strangely enough, is no longer shown in Komoot) that there was a fire incident at the viewing platform in 2023. More on this here: https://www.cz.de/lokales/celle-lk/drei-weitere-braende-feuerteufel-in-samtgemeinde-wathlingen-unterwegs-462CB5EBF4E43DCEC2F46CD6DB.html https://eu4.appdinx.com/gz8gzx2rn3g/share/qyasr7whryvw4u1bpyg5 The reopening is said to have been in May of this year, but I haven't found any further sources for this.

Many thanks to @Peter Löhr, who apparently informed us about the fire incident at the viewing platform at a time when my MTB highlight was still visible on the Komoot maps. According to my research, this occurred as early as 2023: https://www.cz.de/lokales/celle-lk/drei-weitere-braende-feuerteufel-in-samtgemeinde-wathlingen-unterwegs-462CB5EBF4E43DCEC2F46CD6DB.html https://eu4.appdinx.com/gz8gzx2rn3g/share/qyasr7whryvw4u1bpyg5 The reopening is said to have been in May of this year, but I haven't found any further sources for this.

The platform, rebuilt after a fire, is no longer quite so hidden, but there are still no seating facilities. However, you don't really need them with the great view of ospreys and water birds in a wonderful landscape with two ponds and associated flora and fauna on two levels...
