The Martinskirche in Remels is not only centrally located, it is also beautifully located. I particularly liked the Easter gate to the churchyard entrance. It is the last remnant of the old fortification of the ramparts around the church, when it was still a fortified church in the Middle Ages. But the church portal is also a real eye-catcher. On my first visit, I was impressed by the details, but also by the overall ambience. The church also owes its construction in the early 13th century to the need for a meeting place for the councilors of the Lengen region during the period of Frisian freedom. Due to frequent looting, the church was laid out as a fortified church and also had ramparts, moats, defense and gate towers. Even today, the old system is easy to imagine on a tour of the church grounds. For more details have a look at Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St.-Martin-Kirche_(Remels)
