A steep climb leads to the fortress, but unfortunately it was closed. However, there is a beautiful view over the bay of Funchal.

The Bank of Portugal in Funchal is one of the most striking buildings in the old town. With its impressive facade of dark volcanic rock, its distinctive tower, and its elegant architectural details, it's a real eye-catcher on Praça do Município. A great stop on your tour through Madeira's historic center.

You can easily walk the trail from both sides, either up with the cable car and down with the bus or vice versa.

Currently, there is no waterfall due to low water supply. But the bridge makes a nice change on the walk along the levada.

A truly beautiful, varied trail; I was pleasantly surprised. The path next to the canal is relatively narrow in some places, but it's well-maintained. I don't think it's a good idea to hike it in the rain, though. But that's probably the same for other mountain trails around the world ;-) I liked that it's accessible by cable car and that there are several small towns along the way where you can take the bus back.
