Great view onto the Tahoe National Forest. The view spot is only a small distance down a trail off the PCT, so it is definitely worth the extra effort.

Very short spur from the PCT leads to this sweeping overlook, well worth a minute to enjoy the views. The historic pass was one of the routes explored by early immigrants, and later by miners.

Just before reaching the high point along the Pacific Crest Trail it meets and joins Castle Peak Trail turning to the north, but then leaves it again a few yards later going straight north, while Castle climbs up the obvious ridge to the north-east. The saddle at the pass has some nice campsite options, though it's worth to go the extra mile to the Peter Grubb Hut for water, restroom, and save time for shelter.

The old Hwy 40 passed through this summmit at 7135 ft elevation, still today the Donner Pass Road. Fast and heavy traffic of course goes over the I-80 interstate freeway a couple of miles north. Also the site of German BierGarten Restaurant "Summit Haus" open from mid June to Labor Day (early September) 11am-4pm, part of Sugar Bowl Resort
