We did the climb from the Restonica valley in early July. Heavy rainfall in May caused exceptionally large snowfields below the couloir. Orientation and finding a way was therefore more difficult than under normal circumstances. In particular, the descent on what is actually the same path required a good sense of direction, very confusing, also due to randomly placed cairns that ended in dead ends below the couloir (sometimes on the mighty, too steep granite slabs, which abruptly bordered snowfields and forced to turn back... with then new attempts). In total we have 15km, 3200m difference in altitude (ascent, descent), 6.5 hours in motion and 11.5 hours total time (2 x 45min breaks, remaining time for photos, path search) needed. Tip: be sure to inquire about the snow situation beforehand. possibly Bring a toddle, a snow plate for sticks and a rope. Luckily the snow was very soft, so we didn't need all that. Sticks are mandatory!

La Bocca alla Porte is one of the most impressive passages of the GR 20. At around 2,200 meters above sea level, this passage is reached by means of a steep climb from the Manganu refuge. La Bocca delivers exceptional panoramas on the lakes of Capitello and Melo, as well as the valleys which it separates.

Beautiful descent to Lake Melo from the Bocca Soglia. Good marking and good to walk. Beautiful stream and a great view of the Melosee!

A nice climb in a snowfield, and a really steep slope! (We noted a measurement with more than 45% slope!) Well taken, it is quite accessible and climbs quite quickly. You have to take advantage of the view at the top which is superb.

At 2,206 m, the second highest point on this stage. Here a path branches off to the north to the mountain lake Lac Rinoso, which continues to Corte. But we continued the relatively easy way east to the Refuge de Petra Piana.

The path to Lac de Capitello branches off here at an altitude of approx. 2,000 m and continues to Corte.

The reserve is defined by its towering peaks, glacial lakes, and unique high-altitude ecosystems. Key features include Monte Ritondu, the second-highest peak in Corsica, and numerous high-altitude lakes such as Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello. The rugged Restonica and Verghellu Valleys also contribute to its distinctive landscape.
For unparalleled panoramic views, the Monte Rotondo Summit offers a spectacular 360-degree vista of the island, extending to the Mediterranean Sea on clear days. Bocca alle Porte provides impressive views of Lac de Capitello and the surrounding mountains, while Soglia Pass offers grandiose views of both mountain lakes and the distant bay of Ajaccio.
Many trails in the reserve, especially those leading to summits and high-altitude passes, are considered challenging. For instance, the ascent to Monte Ritondu is demanding, and sections like Bocca alle Porte can be snowy even in June, requiring experience. Trails often involve boulder fields and exposed sections, demanding surefootedness. However, there are also easier options available in the surrounding areas.
Yes, while many high-mountain trails are challenging, you can find easier hiking options in the surrounding areas. The reserve is renowned for its numerous glacial lakes. Among the most picturesque and well-known are Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello, often accessed via trails from the Restonica valley. Other significant lakes include Lac de l'Oriente, Lac de Cavacciole, Lac de Scapucciole, Lac de Rinoso (such as Grand Lac de Rinoso), and Lac de Bellebone, all offering stunning mountain scenery.
Given the challenging terrain and high-altitude environment, it's essential to pack appropriately. This includes sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing for varying weather, rain gear, sufficient water and snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, and sun protection. For more difficult routes, consider trekking poles and potentially crampons or ice axes if snow is present, even in early summer.
While Lac de Melo and Lac de Capitello are popular, the reserve contains many other high-altitude lakes and less-frequented areas. Exploring trails to lakes like Lac de l'Oriente, Lac de Cavacciole, or Lac de Scapucciole might offer a more solitary experience. Additionally, venturing beyond the most direct routes to major summits can lead to quieter sections of the massif.
