Unfortunately, there was no water flowing during our hike. But the walk to the waterfall is a little adventure and also recommended.

Despite rain, unfortunately no waterfall at the beginning of March 25. It must have rained for a while beforehand.

La Palma is a great place to visit, and this itinerary is fantastic (including the "other" waterfall suggested by SiMone above). But the Cascada de Los Colores is a tourist trap. Actually: - It is not colored. - it is not natural, but a small, insignificant artificial dam - Looks 30 m high, but is actually only 3.5 m. - There is little water most of the year. That doesn't mean it's not worth the hike! It is just good to go there and come back and enjoy the beautiful trip. But do not expect to see such a magical natural phenomenon. WARNING: in some sections, the route moves away from the bottom of the barranco to avoid dangerous areas due to the possibility of rockfall and sudden flooding. Be extremely careful in these sections, especially if the weather has been bad or if you notice bad weather upstream. Finally, there is a section overhung by a large traverse rock that is difficult to pass, especially uphill. Better to transit by the suggested route, especially if there is a lot of water.

The actual waterfall currently (June) has little water. We discovered a good alternative. Shortly before the destination at the fork to the Cascada, we followed the left stream path and then found this wonderful place 😊. It did involve a bit of climbing, but it wasn't difficult.

The island of La Palma, accessible from Santa Cruz De La Palma, features several impressive waterfalls. Among the most popular are the Colorful Waterfall, known for its vibrant hues, and the Los Tilos Waterfall, nestled within a lush laurel forest. Another significant site is the Marcos Spring Waterfall, which is a source of water channeled through a series of tunnels.
The Colorful Waterfall, or Cascada de Colores, is distinctive for its vibrant, multi-colored appearance. This striking effect is due to ferrous sediments, algae, and moss tinting the rock face with reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and whites as water cascades over an artificial wall. It's a prime photographic subject within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
The Los Tilos Waterfall is considered easily accessible and suitable for families. Located in the Los Tilos laurel forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it's a short, approximately 20-minute walk from the visitor's center. The trail includes walking through illuminated tunnels, adding an adventurous element that children often enjoy. There are also picnic areas and a restaurant nearby.
Reaching the Marcos Spring Waterfall is part of the adventurous Marcos y Cordero Way. This route is known for its abundant water, springs, and channels, leading through lush vegetation and numerous dark tunnels where water seeps down. The springs themselves appear as several waterfalls as you exit the last tunnel, creating a powerful auditory and visual experience. It's an intermediate hike that requires some skill and experience.
Yes, both the Los Tilos Waterfall and the Marcos Spring Waterfall involve walking through tunnels. The path to Los Tilos includes illuminated tunnels, while the Marcos y Cordero Way to Marcos Spring Waterfall is famous for its thirteen tunnels, where water often seeps through, adding to the adventure.
The 'Waterfall of Clouds' is a unique meteorological phenomenon on La Palma, not a traditional water cascade. It occurs when Atlantic trade winds push clouds over the eastern side of the island's ridge, causing them to spill over like a massive, billowy waterfall. It's a mesmerizing natural spectacle that showcases the island's unique climate and geography.
The areas around the waterfalls offer excellent opportunities for outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including those within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. For more options, explore the Hiking around Santa Cruz De La Palma guide. There are also mountain hikes and cycling routes available, detailed in the Mountain Hikes around Santa Cruz De La Palma and Cycling around Santa Cruz De La Palma guides, respectively.
The waterfalls on La Palma can be visited year-round, but the best time often depends on recent rainfall. During or after periods of rain, the waterfalls tend to be more voluminous and spectacular. The lush laurel forests, like Los Tilos, are beautiful in any season, offering a cool, humid environment. Always check local conditions before heading out.
Yes, parking is generally available near the main waterfall attractions. For the Colorful Waterfall, visitors can park at Barranco de Las Angustias. For the Los Tilos Waterfall, there is parking available at the visitor's center, making it convenient for a short walk to the falls.
The trails to these waterfalls offer diverse natural features. The hike to the Colorful Waterfall takes you through the dramatic volcanic terrain and deep ravines of Caldera de Taburiente. The path to Los Tilos Waterfall immerses you in a dense, humid laurel forest, creating an atmosphere akin to a 'tropical jungle.' The Marcos Spring Waterfall route features lush vegetation and impressive vertical rock walls.
Visitors frequently praise the unique natural beauty and the adventurous journeys to the waterfalls. The vibrant colors of the Colorful Waterfall are often highlighted as a memorable sight. The primeval scenery and the short, spectacular tunnel tour to Los Tilos Waterfall are also highly appreciated. Many enjoy the cooling effect of the water and the impressive views along the barrancos.
