Her husband, an old Danube nymph, had banished her to the Blautopf spring after she had only given birth to dead children out of sheer sadness. The curse would only be lifted if she laughed heartily five times. Equipped with a whole court of chambermaids and maids, she lived a secluded life in her underground palace. It took a real Swabian, the nun's innkeeper Betha Seysolffin, a stolen kiss, a child's chamber pot and that well-known tongue twister »There's a little block of lead right by Blaubeura, There's a little block of lead right by Blaubeura« to rescue her. The Danube mermaid swam along, the Blautopf overflowed and with it the new happiness of love. As she left, the mermaid promised to come back with the child in her arms. The legend of the beautiful Lau tells that a shoemaker's apprentice from Stuttgart, who was traveling around the country with magic shoes, met the beautiful Lau, a water nymph, at the Blautopf. This wife of a water king in the Black Sea was banished to the Blautopf because she could not bear living children. Through contact with the people of Blaubeuren, she learned to laugh again, which freed her from her curse and helped her return to her husband. A monument to the beautiful Lau was erected at the Blautopf, right next to the hammer forge, and was created by the sculptor Fritz von Graevenitz.
