The castle was built around 1355 by Counts Gerhard von Diez and Johann I von Nassau-Weilburg in place of an existing church (around 790) on an isolated Schalstein rock. This was preceded by a feud that broke out in 1353 between the two families of counts over control of the town of Kirberg. The joint building of castles was a result of the arbitration negotiations. Together with the construction of the fortress, a church and a circular wall were built for the town of Kirberg, which at the same time received city rights. However, the facility does not appear to have been used for a long time. A poor state of construction is recorded for 1500. Until the end of the 16th century it was used as accommodation when the sovereigns visited. Until 1670 there was at least one guard at the castle. In 1673 a pleasure garden was created on the rock. By 1700, some of the buildings had already fallen into disrepair or had been demolished to extract building materials.

The closer you get to the castle the closer you get to the town center. The town center, gate and path to the castle are worth seeing. Likewise the view from the castle keep
