Mszczonów, with the outbreak of World War II, unfortunately became a particularly important communication point on the route of the German offensive. First, the units of the "Łódź" Army withdrew through here, then German armored columns advancing on Warsaw rolled through its streets, then on September 11, the city was retaken by a daring night attack by the 31st Kaniv Riflemen Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Wincenty Wnuk. For this glorious feat, which went down in the history of that memorable September as one of the most magnificent victories of the Polish soldier, the Germans took their cruel revenge. Stanisław Kasperkiewicz, the headmaster of the then local Public Elementary School No. 1, summed up their barbarity in the school chronicle as follows: "...Blasco Ibanez wrote too little in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". "Cultural" Germans showed their true colors. It is not known whether any other city paid such a tribute of blood and property in the first days of the war as the unfortunate Mszczonów."
