Tips from the Community

Jared
May 30, 2025, Lake Atalanta

Grew up walking around this lake with my Mema. When I come to visit it's the one place that I love to go get a run in. I've seen walkers, runners, bikers on the paved walkway or the trails. It's a great place to go if want to get away from all the cars. Last time I went they've expanded the trails and made new ones. It also looks like they have some room to make more. For bikers they have green blue and black trails so you pick your skill level.

Are there any easy loop trails in Prairie Creek?

Yes, several easy loop trails are available. For example, the Lake Atalanta Loop offers a pleasant 3 km walk, while the Bashore Ridge Loop Trail provides a slightly longer 6.7 km option with gentle elevation changes, perfect for a relaxed outing.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see on easy hikes?

On easy hikes, you'll encounter towering old-growth redwoods, lush fern-covered forest floors, and open meadows where Roosevelt elk often graze. Some trails might even lead you close to the wild and scenic Gold Bluffs Beach, offering diverse landscapes within a single park.

Are the easy trails suitable for families with children?

Absolutely! Many easy trails in Prairie Creek are ideal for families. The Rim Rock Nature Trail is a very short and accessible option, perfect for little legs. The park also features the Revelation Trail, specifically designed for sensory engagement, which can be a fun and educational experience for children.

Can I bring my dog on the easy hiking trails?

While Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is generally dog-friendly in developed areas like campgrounds, picnic areas, and paved roads, dogs are typically not allowed on unpaved hiking trails to protect wildlife and natural resources. Always check specific trail regulations at the park entrance or visitor center before heading out.

What is the best time of year to visit Prairie Creek for easy hikes?

Prairie Creek is beautiful year-round. Spring brings vibrant rhododendron blooms, while summer offers warmer, sunnier days. Fall provides crisp air and fewer crowds, and winter, though wetter, can offer a mystical experience with mist-shrouded redwoods. The mild coastal climate generally makes easy hiking enjoyable in any season.

How long do the easy hikes typically take?

The duration of easy hikes varies. Shorter trails like the Rim Rock Nature Trail can be completed in under 10 minutes, while others like the Controlled Burn Trail might take around an hour. Longer easy loops, such as the Hiking loop from Beaver Pond Observation Deck, can take up to 1 hour and 45 minutes, allowing for a more extended exploration.

Are there any notable wildlife viewing opportunities on easy trails?

Yes, Prairie Creek is famous for its wildlife. Herds of majestic Roosevelt elk frequently graze in the park's open meadows, such as Elk Meadow, which can often be seen from accessible areas or trails bordering these spaces. Keep an eye out for various bird species and smaller mammals as well.

What should I wear for easy hikes in Prairie Creek?

Given the coastal climate and potential for mist or rain, it's best to dress in layers. Comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are recommended. A light rain jacket is always a good idea, even on sunny days, as conditions can change quickly under the redwood canopy.

Are there any permits or fees required for easy hiking in Prairie Creek?

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is part of the Redwood National and State Parks system. While there isn't a specific fee for hiking on most trails, there may be day-use fees for parking in certain areas or for accessing specific facilities.
