Easy hikes and walks around Stagno di Platamona

The Abbacurrente tower represents an element of the complex of fortified structures which, from the early Middle Ages to the mid-19th century, performed the function of defence, sighting and communication along the Sardinian coast. Located on the edge of the sea, on a rocky protrusion at the left end of the long Platamona beach, the tower mainly had a signaling purpose. Due to its small size, it could only accommodate a small garrison. Its strategic location allowed visual contact with the towers of Isola Piana, Trabucado and, on clear days, also with that of Isola Rossa.

Beautiful beach that is not too crowded in October and is often visited by locals.

The Platamona pond derives its name from the Greek and means flat surface. In fact it is a flat area where you feel like a guest of luxuriant nature. It is a perfect place for birdwatchers.

Observation and watchtower accessible via a small path directly from the SP81 provincial road. When it was in use, the tower could only be reached by a ladder over the high entrance door. This was stowed inside the tower by the security guards for their own safety after entry. Unfortunately, the tower cannot be climbed, but you still have a great view of the Spiaggie di Abbacurrente and the beach of Platamona.

The new cycle and pedestrian area of the Marina di Sorso is a stretch of road reserved for bicycles and pedestrians along the coastal provincial road. It skirts the coastal pine forests, with splendid views of the sea, the Pond of Platamona and the coastal spots. Well infrastructured, separated from vehicular traffic and well signposted, it is an excellent stretch to cycle safely.

The Abbacurrente tower is a tower belonging to the complex of fortified structures which, from the early Middle Ages to the mid-nineteenth century, formed the defensive, sighting and communication system of the Sardinian coasts. It is located by the sea, on a rock bank located on the far left of the long beach of Platamona, in the Gulf of Asinara; is administratively part of the municipality of Porto Torres (province of Sassari), from which it is about four kilometers away.Built with limestone found in the immediate hinterland, the tower, truncated in shape, has a simple structure and small dimensions: 12.5 meters height and 8.70 in diameter. As in most of the Sardinian coastal towers, the entrance door is located at a height of about four meters from the ground and allowed access only with the aid of rope or wooden ladders that could be quickly retracted in case of danger. The interior, formed by a single circular room with a diameter of about six meters, is closed by a domed vault with four reinforcing ribs. In the absence of an internal masonry staircase, the parade ground was reached through a trap door using a ladder. The Abbacurrente tower was not classified as a "offense tower" but only "for signaling" in fact due to its small size it could only accommodate a small garrison of two or three soldiers. Its position allowed a visual contact with the towers of Isola Piana, Trabucado and, on clear days, with that of Isola Rossa. In 2009 it underwent renovation and consolidation works, made necessary following the deterioration caused by the countless storm surges and the disintegrating action of rain and wind.
