The ship was built under construction number 1522 at the Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf. The construction costs amounted to approximately 36 million DM.[1] The keel laying took place on September 14, 1989, and the launch on March 2, 1990. On this day, the ship was also christened. The godmother was Birgit Zimmermann, the wife of the then Federal Minister of Transport, Friedrich Zimmermann.[2] The completion of the ship took place in October 1990, and the commissioning on October 26 of the year.[2] In December 2025, the BSH announced that a new build of the same name is to replace the "Wega" in 2029. Innovations include, among other things, a methanol drive and a dynamic positioning system.

Quite far from the city. Too far to walk.

The WEGA is moored in the fishing port and is a survey, wreck-search, and research vessel. The ship's hull is ice-reinforced and equipped with various cranes and winches. The vessel is primarily used for surveying, wreck-searching, and maintenance work on wave gauge buoys in the German coastal waters of the North and Baltic Seas. As it is not a museum ship, it is not open to the public.

This is what a fish market is said to have looked like 110 years ago. At Fiedler's Fish Market, located in the Schaufenster Fischereihafen (Fishing Harbor Showcase) in 1906, fish is sold or served in restaurants. Further information can be found at https://schaufenster-fischereihafen.de/angebot/?id=2 or via their online shop: https://www.fiedlers-fischmarkt.de/?srsltid=AfmBOooqgYUQ8Fzm0wyqSWbJ050Zhy74aypQOBqftJH6sxRaGR_d6oXJ.

It's quite inexpensive to visit. The short film shown on Bird about life and work on board was very interesting. It's hard to imagine the harsh conditions under which the fish were caught and slaughtered.

As soon as you enter the building, you're greeted by the smell of smoke. They offer a wide selection of fresh and smoked fish. The assorted smoked fish boxes are interesting. The smoked redfish was delicious!
