The WEGA is moored in the fishing port and is a survey, wreck-search, and research vessel. The ship's hull is ice-reinforced and equipped with various cranes and winches. The vessel is primarily used for surveying, wreck-searching, and maintenance work on wave gauge buoys in the German coastal waters of the North and Baltic Seas. As it is not a museum ship, it is not open to the public.

The ship was built under construction number 1522 at the Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf. The construction costs amounted to approximately 36 million DM.[1]

The keel laying took place on September 14, 1989, and the launch on March 2, 1990. On this day, the ship was also christened. The godmother was Birgit Zimmermann, the wife of the then Federal Minister of Transport, Friedrich Zimmermann.[2] The completion of the ship took place in October 1990, and the commissioning on October 26 of the year.[2]
