Easy hikes and walks in Western Australia

The Cape to Cape Track is one of Australia’s best-known long-distance coastal walks, stretching about 123 kilometres between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin through Leeuwin–Naturaliste National Park. The track passes beaches, limestone cliffs, granite headlands, karri forest, caves, and coastal heath, with terrain ranging from soft sand and rocky paths to boardwalks and steep stair sections. Even short sections give you a good feel for the variety of the full trail, especially around Quinninup Falls where the track combines ocean views with sheltered bushland and seasonal creeks.

Quinninup Falls is a seasonal waterfall hidden behind the coastal dunes of Leeuwin–Naturaliste National Park, where Quinninup Brook spills over layered rock into a small fern-lined pool before continuing towards the ocean. The contrast between the dry coastal heath above and the cool, sheltered waterfall below makes this one of the more unusual spots along the Cape to Cape Track. The falls flow best from late winter into spring after steady rain, and the site is culturally significant to the Wadandi people.

Head of the Falls sits at the top of Lesmurdie Falls in Mundy Regional Park, where the water begins its drop over the escarpment. From here, you get a more elevated perspective looking out across the valley, with the falls starting just below the viewpoint. It’s an easy-to-reach spot from nearby parking, with minimal walking compared to the lower sections.

Foot of the Falls Lookout sits at the base of Lesmurdie Falls in Mundy Regional Park, where you can get closest to the cascade as it flows over rock shelves into the valley. It’s a more immersive viewpoint compared to the higher lookouts, with water, rocks, and surrounding bushland right around you. Flow varies depending on recent rainfall.

Herdsman Lake is a shallow urban lake, part of an important wetland system known for its peaceful, calm open water and surrounding reed beds. It attracts over 100 species of waterbirds, including migratory and breeding birds, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. The lake is ecologically important on the Swan Coastal Plain, supporting wildlife and preserving a rare natural habitat near the city.

This walking path that is a beautiful, mostly flat, easy route that loops around the lake, weaving through wetlands, open parklands, and boardwalk sections. It’s ideal for walking, jogging, or birdwatching, with plenty of spots to pause and enjoy the wildlife. There are interpretive signs along the way that highlight the park’s ecology and Noongar heritage.

Herdsman Lake Regional Park is a vibrant urban wetland oasis with open water, seasonal marshes, and surrounding parklands. It’s a haven for over 100 waterbird species and features walking and cycling trails, boardwalks, picnic spots, and a wildlife centre. This area is culturally significant to the Noongar people (who call it Ngurgenboro) and is an important conservation and recreational space in the heart of Perth’s metropolitan area.

Yoorn Walk is a lovely bush track that links Camel Lake Heritage Trail with the longer Zamia Trail. The path winds through banksia woodland typical of Perth’s coastal bushland, passing through dense native vegetation and sandy soil. It’s a quiet connection between the park’s walking routes, offering an up-close look at the diverse plant life of the Swan Coastal Plain.
