The nature reserve primarily comprises the area between the confluence of the Upper and Lower Argen and the Argen's mouth into Lake Constance, i.e. the river course including the steep slopes, alluvial and swamp forests, valley floors, and flood dikes. 236.5 hectares of the area lie in the Bodenseekreis district, 65.8 hectares in the Ravensburg district. Designated 1997 Area 302.4 hectares Protected area identification number 4.282 The primary purpose of protection is described as the conservation and maintenance of the near-natural Argen valley. Below Gießenbrücke, this particularly includes the riverbed and the bank strips, the flood dikes, alluvial and swamp forests, silting-up ponds, bogs and swamps, adjacent reed stands, extensively managed and wet meadows with iris and orchid populations, sedge and rush-rich wet meadows, traditional orchards, and remnants of the Argen mouth arms. Above Gießenbrücke, the riverbed with its predominantly gravelly bank strips and gravel banks, the near-natural alluvial forests, an alluvial forest island, near-natural swamp and bog forests, bogs and swamps, spring areas, ponds, fen areas and wet meadows, as well as numerous unspoiled, natural or near-natural erosion, deposition, and slip slopes on the valley edge with near-natural slope forests and open rock formations are described. The Argen is characterized by a steep gradient, which after the ice ages led to deeply incised valleys, gravel banks, and wooded steep slopes. Flora and fauna: Numerous rare bird and plant species find a refuge in the floodplains and on the erosion slopes.
