Opening Hours: Visits are possible year-round upon request. Keys to the Jewish cemetery can be borrowed from the Spa and Tourist Information Center. The Jewish cemetery on Uhlbergstrasse commemorates the once very large Jewish community of Treuchtlingen, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. The Treuchtlingen Jews initially did not have their own synagogue, but formed a religious community with those in Pappenheim. It wasn't until the 18th century that a synagogue was built in what is now Uhlengasse. In 1773, the community purchased land for a burial site. Jews from Ellingen and Markt Berolzheim, as well as a few from other communities, were also buried here. Thanks to the records of Bernhard Fulder, a teacher at the Jewish school, written down in 1937, the original records have been preserved. Treuchtlingen reached its highest Jewish population in the 19th century, with 16 percent of its 1,700 inhabitants in 1860. By 1939, many Jews had been expelled from the town, whose respected citizens they had been for centuries. The cemetery as it appears today only partially reflects this. During devastating air raids on the town in the final days of the war in 1945, some areas of the cemetery, including several gravestones, were destroyed. The oldest part, in the east of the cemetery, unfortunately no longer exists. The memorial opposite the entrance is the work of the Treuchtlingen artist Franz Peter Burger. He attempted to connect the menorah, an important ritual object in the Jewish faith, with the tree of life. The memorial commemorates the injustices perpetrated against the Jewish people between 1933 and 1945 and beyond. The Tahara House is now used as a residential building. A newly erected memorial to the former synagogue on Uhlengasse will be erected in mid-2023. https://www.tourismus-treuchtlingen.de/sehenswertes/juedischer_friedhof-24172/

Clearly contoured on all sides, the elongated Nagelberg rises to a height of around 130 metres northeast of Treuchtlingen. Accordingly, there are very nice views of the valley all around.

The historical map shows the monastery fountain and former temple area at this location. Traces are still visible on the grounds.
