Aunteen Woods is an area of mixed woodland with several walking trails on the eastern edge of Galway. Popular with local dog walkers and for a lunchtime stroll but not massive so not really a walking destination. Combine with nearby Merlin woods for a longer walk.

Ballynacourty Point can be reached on a fine coastal hike from Carrowmore. It's worth checking tide times and setting out at low tide, as high tides can make crossing the Shanmullen Channel trickier.

This channel creates an island at high tide but usually connects its eastern and western ends. Shanmullen is derived from the Irish Gaelic, sean-mhuileann, which means old mill. However, there's no evidence of a mill at this spot. What you might see, however, is seals frolicking in the water here.

Merlin Castle, otherwise known as Doughiske Castle, is a 15th-century medieval tower house, which is now in ruins and is set within the confines of charming Merlin Woods. It is three storeys high and now in disuse but is still mainly intact and adds a certain charm to your woodland walk.

Merlin Woods is just on the outskirts of Galway. It is a gorgeous green area available to the public and is one of the biggest urban woodland areas in Ireland. There are a few trails you can follow in the woods, if you follow the perimeter trail, that gives you about a three-kilometre route. In addition, you can go and see the old ruins of Merlin Castle, which is on the western side of the forest.

Also known as Renville Castle, this four storey building was first recorded in 1574 as being owned by Richard McThomas Oge, a member of the Burke family. It has been restored and offers a wonderful glimpse of life in times gone by.

Over the top of the children's playground you can see the ruins of the Church of Ireland Monivea. Consecrated in 1769, all that remains today is the belltower. The roof of the church collapsed in 1955 after it fell out of use in the 1920s. You can see the way that nature is overtaking the church with greenery peaking out from the top of the tower and the windows.
