September 23, 2023, The Erinswood Trail

The Erinswood Trail is a .6 mile, wheelchair-friendly, crushed gravel loop. This accessible trail meanders through the lush mossy forests that Washington state is famous for. There are usually interesting fungus and mushrooms because of how wet the environment is; it can be fun to try to spot them from the trail in the dense undergrowth.

You will likely want microspikes in early spring to make it to the lake. The views are stunning, and in summer you can jump in to cool off.

It is a great hike to enjoy on its own, or nice to add on if you wanted to add a little extra mileage to the Leovy Trail, which goes to the top of Heybrook Ridge.

This relatively short (1.3 miles one way) and moderately steep trail takes you through a lush mossy forest to the Heybrook Lookout, a wooden tower that grants phenomenal views of the surrounding dramatic peaks.

September 4, 2023, Heybrook Lookout

The Heybrook Lookout is located just below the summit of Mount Heybrook and offers truly stunning panoramic views across the town of Index to the world-famous Town Walls and the surrounding rugged, dramatic mountains. There is a picnic area and an 89-step wooden lookout tower that you can climb to the top of and enjoy the views from an even higher vantage point. You can see Mount Persis, Mount Baring, Mount Index, and Bridal Veil Falls from here.

There are camping spots up here and you can swim in the lake. It's very peaceful and relaxing. Plan to spend some time enjoying the atmosphere.

Bring boots and spikes in the early spring. Tennis shoes will NOT suffice for reaching the lake. At the time of this post, there was an avalanche blocking the upper falls.
