The trails in the park are wide and well-marked. The changing leaves make this an especially beautiful hike in the fall. The scenery is stunning and the trail winds through a cave near the southern end. Make sure you are prepared for creek crossings.

The rocky canyon cliffs, wide riverbed, and evergreen forests make the Sluice Boxes trail a truly special Montana landscape. Be prepared for creek crossings! There is a parking fee for those who are out of state.

November 8, 2023, Belt Creek crossing

Depending on the time of year, the river crossings can be anywhere from ankle-deep to waist-high. You are best off checking the water levels before you arrive and bringing roll-up hiking pants or water shoes. There are four creek crossings between the start and the typical turn-around point of the trail.

The trail is narrow and can be difficult to follow in places due to the number of diverging side paths. At the start of the trail keep left at the fork. Bearing right leads you to an overlook and informative plaque.

When Sacajawea was guiding Lewis and Clark across the prairie she fell ill. History has it that when they made portage camp and she was given water from the springs her illness was cured.
