When we were here in early April 2026, we couldn't do the circular trail (closed), but it was possible to walk to the Castel after paying the entrance fee. Definitely worth it, great view

Fantastic refuge with a part that is always open, immersed in the middle of the Madonie park. Equipped with a fireplace inside and a barbecue outside. Possibility of collecting wood outside. Always kept in excellent condition by the forestry department. Truly suggestive

For footwear, I recommend sturdy shoes for the middle section (mostly steps and easy to walk on) and hiking boots for the very top (medium difficulty). Birkenstocks, etc., are for risk-takers who prefer a helicopter rescue in the event of an accident – experienced firsthand. €5, OK, maybe a bit excessive – but let's be honest, how much does a beer at the beach bar or the trip here cost? At least there's no trash on the trail. Wonderful views and magnificent flora (early April) are guaranteed. It's better to start early in the morning, otherwise it's a highway full of tourists.

The entrance fee is €5 per person (October 2024). Allow yourself a little time in the morning (15-20 minutes). There are a few more people. Nevertheless, you should make the climb in the morning - because of the heat and the light conditions for taking photos. It is definitely worth it. An absolute must.

The Palermo region offers a diverse range of mountaineering experiences. While this guide highlights 4 specific routes, the broader area, including destinations like Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, boasts over 1,000 climbing routes catering to various skill levels. You'll find options from easy ascents to more challenging climbs across its limestone cliffs, coastal paths, and mountainous regions.
Mountaineering in Palermo is characterized by dramatic limestone massifs and extensive nature reserves. You'll encounter steep limestone walls, particularly on mountains like Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, which rise directly from the sea. Inland, areas like the Madonie Park offer vast mountainous terrain with peaks exceeding 1,900 meters, providing a mix of rocky paths and high-altitude trails.
Yes, there are options for easier ascents. For instance, the Rocca di Cefalù loop from Cefalù is an easy 1.9-mile (3.1 km) trail that offers beautiful views of the historic Rocca di Cefalù and the coastline, making it a great choice for those looking for a less strenuous experience.
Many routes offer stunning views and access to historical sites. For example, the Rocca di Cefalù loop from Cefalù provides views of the historic Rocca di Cefalù — Castle Ruins. Further inland, routes in the Madonie Park can lead to significant summits like Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m), Sicily's second-highest peak, offering expansive vistas. The View of Cefalù from the cross on La Rocca is another highly-rated viewpoint.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. A moderate option is the Fontana Porta Terra – Rocca di Cefalù loop from Cefalù, which extends your exploration of the Cefalù area, combining coastal and elevated perspectives. Another is the Cross on Monte Grotta Grande loop from Isnello, leading through mountainous terrain.
Palermo's Mediterranean climate generally makes mountaineering enjoyable for much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures, ideal for longer treks. Summer can be hot, especially at lower altitudes, but higher peaks in areas like the Madonie Park provide cooler conditions. Winter mountaineering is possible, particularly on higher peaks, but requires appropriate gear and awareness of snow conditions.
The routes in Palermo are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars from over 4 reviews. Mountaineers often praise the region's diverse terrain, from stunning coastal views to challenging inland peaks, and the opportunity to explore both historical sites and pristine natural reserves.
Absolutely. The region is renowned for its challenging climbing opportunities. Monte Pellegrino, for example, is Sicily's largest climbing area, offering hundreds of sports routes and classic multi-pitch routes up to 200 meters. Monte Gallo also features walls up to 400 meters high with multi-pitch bolted routes, drawing comparisons to the Dolomites for its rugged character and steep limestone.
Many routes in Palermo provide spectacular panoramic views. The ascent to the summit of Monte Pellegrino, for instance, offers breathtaking vistas of Palermo and the Gulf of Mondello. Similarly, Rocca Busambra summit (1,613 m) provides spectacular 360-degree views reminiscent of higher continental mountains.
Yes, the Madonie Park is a significant mountainous region inland from Palermo, ideal for more challenging hiking and mountaineering. The Pagghiaru Panoramic Viewpoint – Pagghiaru of Piano Pomo loop from Rifugio Crispi is a moderate route that takes you through this vast area, offering a taste of its rugged beauty and high-altitude landscapes.
