Super accessible from the Taurer hiking parking lot. No problem even with a stroller. For those who choose the path through the tunnel! Don't forget a flashlight!

The hiking trail through the Proßeggklamm was closed for a long time and has been rebuilt. The winding path leads through short tunnels and through the gorge with impressive views. Many parts of the narrow path are secured with ropes as it drops almost vertically into the depths. A sign at both entrances warns of the dangers, including the danger of falling rocks in some sections (if you like, you can borrow a helmet from the Matrei tourist office for a 5 euro deposit). In theory, a via ferrata set can also be used at the rope-secured sections. However, if you are sure-footed and have a head for heights, you won't need this in normal weather. According to the internet, the passage is "forbidden" for children under 10 years of age, but the signs on site recommend that children be roped up. As a fall from the path can be fatal, this seems sensible depending on the age and level of understanding and sure-footedness. Small children will not always be able to reach the ropes; the path is too narrow for them to walk next to each other. It is not without reason that it is pointed out that this is a path and not a walking path. So decent shoes are also recommended. We (mountain-experienced but small "climbers" or alpinists) relaxedly hiked through the gorge with our dog in dry conditions and were able to fully enjoy the path and the view. The passage is free. You can reach the gorge from Matrei along the Tauernbach (worth it!) or park near the gorge entrance on the edge of Proßegg. Conclusion: It's worth it!

Beautiful walk, in the beginning along the fence, then it becomes more relaxed. In winter, the section after the tunnel is closed. It is doable with shoes under your shoes, but it is very dangerous on the frozen snow with those precipices.

The trip to the Daberklamm is definitely worth a nature experience. On the way to the gorge, we passed a waterfall and a small rest area, which was a highlight. Next to the gorge parking available but you have to walk 5 minutes to the start but everything is free of charge. Then you first go on a wide path into the gorge, then it gets narrower and you continue along the rock face. There is also a platform directly above the gorge, a place for great shots. If you are afraid of heights or are traveling by bike or stroller, wheelchair, etc., you can also use a tunnel, but lighting is required. We didn't have any flashlights, we used our smartphones on the way back. Lots of nature, great scenery at no cost.

The canyons around Virgen, shaped by glacial rivers, showcase impressive geological formations. At the Umbal Falls, you can observe how the Isel River has eroded rock into wave-like abrasions, basins, kettles, and whirlpools. The water's whitish-cloudy color, known as 'glacier milk,' is due to finely ground rock flour from the glacier, especially visible in summer.
While popular spots like Dabaklamm Gorge and Umbal Falls attract many visitors, the wider Dorfertal Valley, which opens up shortly after the Dabaklamm, offers expansive alpine meadows and mountain views, providing a more spread-out experience. The Maurertal Valley also offers a high alpine experience with beautiful trails and a glacial lake, which can feel less crowded depending on the season.
The Umbal Falls are among the most spectacular waterfalls in Tyrol, formed by the glacial Isel River. They are known for the 'Nature-Power-Path' (Naturkraftweg Umbalfälle), which allows visitors to experience the roaring water up close from various platforms. Declared a natural monument in 1991, they highlight the immense power of a glacial river shaping the landscape.
The Isel Canyon, or Iselschlucht, is notable for its rugged beauty, where the Isel River carves its way through ancient mountain terrain. A significant highlight is a 90-meter-high suspension bridge offering a deep view into the mighty canyon, showcasing the river's power to polish rocks into smooth, wave-like formations.
Yes, several trails are suitable for families. The hike to the Umbal Falls from the Ströden parking lot is considered easy and can even be partially covered by horse-drawn carriage, making it suitable for children aged six and over. The Dabaklamm Gorge is also listed as family-friendly.
The summer months are ideal for visiting the canyons around Virgen, particularly for experiencing the full power of glacial rivers like the Isel. During this time, glacier melt is strongest, leading to impressive water volumes at sites like the Umbal Falls. The 'glacier milk' color of the water is also most prominent then.
The region around Virgen offers diverse hiking opportunities. Yes, for experienced hikers, the Prossegg Gorge Trail offers a challenging experience. This winding path includes short tunnels and sections secured with ropes, dropping almost vertically into the depths. It requires sure-footedness and a head for heights, with recommendations for proper footwear and caution regarding falling rocks.
While specific regulations for each trail vary, some visitors have successfully hiked trails like the Prossegg Gorge Trail with their dogs under dry conditions. It's always advisable to check local signage and ensure your dog is well-behaved and capable of handling the terrain, especially on narrow or steep sections.
Beyond hiking, the Virgen area provides excellent opportunities for cycling and gravel biking. You can find routes like the 'Islitzer Waterfall – Islitzer Alm loop from Matrei in Osttirol' for cycling or the 'Iselschlucht Trail – View of the Isel Gorge loop from Hinterbichl' for gravel biking. For more details, refer to the Cycling around Virgen guide and the Gravel biking around Virgen guide.
Generally, permits are not required for hiking the main canyon and gorge trails around Virgen, such as Dabaklamm Gorge or Umbal Falls. However, if you plan to venture into higher alpine areas or specific sections of the Hohe Tauern National Park, it's always wise to check with local information centers for any specific regulations or guided tour requirements.
Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking natural beauty and the immersive experience. Many appreciate the opportunity to witness the immense power of glacial rivers, the spectacular viewpoints, and the well-maintained trails that allow close access to these natural wonders.
