The skylights of the side entrances have since been decorated with the coats of arms of the city and the Privy Council. The large central gate even allowed freight wagons to enter the two-aisled vaulted hall. The old council chamber was located in the basement of the town hall. It is so deep that the temperature there is always a cool 4 °C.
